Technical resources in support of L1-based multilingual education internationally

MLE International is an organization committed to supporting the use of learners’ own languages in bi- and multilingual, intercultural education programs. It is coordinated by founder Dr Carol Benson, who has worked with bilingual programs, practices and policies since the 1980s in countries across the Africa, Latin America and Asia and Pacific regions, as well as Europe and the U.S. The MLE International network includes academics, practitioners, organizations and development professionals who are committed to research and policy change that decolonizes languages and learning and provides real opportunities for speakers of non-dominant languages to gain quality education at the primary level and beyond.

What we offer:

Technical resources

We provide resources and links to information, materials and articles for those implementing L1-based bi- and multilingual education (MLE) programs. We are developing a section to share country-specific contacts and information about MLE.

Advising

We offer advice on research projects that explore educational opportunities for speakers of non-dominant languages using multi-level, comparative, mixed-method analyses of student outcomes, school retention and passing rates, classroom interaction, teacher agency and advocacy, community participation and stakeholder attitudes.

Networking

Our network includes academics, practitioners, organizations and development professionals who are committed to research and policy change that decolonizes languages and learning and provides real opportunities for speakers of non-dominant languages to gain quality education at the primary level and beyond.

Consulting

We will connect you with qualified local, regional and international specialists who can provide technical assistance in language-in-education policy and practices. We prioritize local and Indigenous experts and NGOs whose skills are most relevant to the needs of a project or program.
